FireZone

Rargh, almost a month since my last post - I have been (as mentioned previously) working hard on my entry to the Astronomican's Winter (Summer) 2011 contest.

That is now done (sans some last minute revisions) so I have been working on other stuff - namely FireZone.

What is FireZone (besides 28mm skirmish)? No, not a rip off of Big Jim's excellent Killzone, but a game I've had in my head for the last 15 odd years. It started as a tabletop version of Syndicate of all things, and that has been its core design - small units in urban / jungle / CQB environments (the name is taken from the ancient Dos/Amiga game, I considered changing it but liked it too much - other contenders have been DropZone and CQB).
Design philosophy wise it is similar to GURPS - you can make anything fit with enough jimmying, but it is primarily designed for hard sci-fi, near future or post apoc type games.

I've finally decided to write it up properly due to one big factor - Studio McVey's Sedition Wars. As regular readers will know I'm a big fan of the Studio McVey minis, and the Sedition Wars line is no different.
I had been somewhat on the fence about getting them - I wanted to but I really didn't need another line - but then they released the Firebrand minis and I had to, they were too good to resist (side note: I'm getting them in resin but they're going to be out in metal soon. Once the metals are out the resins will be gone, so if you want them you'd better hurry!).
So in conversation with Mike McVey about some postage stuff (in which I might add he was most helpful and accommodating) I asked if there were plans for a SW game, and if not if he would mind if I made stats for the SW figures. He said there weren't as yet and I was free to do so.

In the spirit of that I got to work properly crunching numbers and mathhammering things and writing it all down coherently. I'm putting up the first few pages so you can all have a look at what I've been up to. Once it is done I'll have some 'generic' forces, as well as statting out for the Sedition Wars minis and maybe a few other sci-fi lines.

Highway to the Killin' Zone

As many of you will be aware, Big Jim over at Galaxy in Flames has been spearheading an awesome project named Killzone.

Now, being the up to date and on the ball guy I've been pondering the rules and come up with a couple of lists.

The first is designed around using Hasslefree's Grymm as a band of mercenaries with nothing to lose (as their strongholds were eaten by 'nids).
The codex I'll be using is Space Wolves, with every model being a Wolf Scout. This gives everyone Infiltration, Move Through Cover and Scout (with a nasty Outflank), as well as carapace armour.

Halla - Bolter, CCW (team leader) - 15pts

Foggi, Silvia, Stondraeg - each with: Sniper Rifle, Bolt Pistol, (Crack Shot KZ skill) - 23pts ea. (69)

Sahmi - Heavy Bolter, CCW - 20pts

Auda - Bolter, CCW (Auspex KZ wargear) - 25pts

Stefan, - Flamer, CCW - 20pts

Gustav - Missile Launcher, CCW - 25pts

Kurt, Tomlinz, Kadlin, Dagni, Kyhli - Bolter, CCW - 15pts ea. (75)

249 pts, 13 dudes and dudettes, with a 'tourney legal' special KZ skills/gear loadout.

I can have the seemingly masses of special weapons due to the snipers being squad upgrades, rather than individual purchases. The snipers will most likely be using their Crack Shot skill to re-roll wounds as they are the 'weaker' roll. The Auspex is for using with either the heavy bolter or missile launcher.

Other options include Krags for an alternate leader, Astrid for a melta gun (it's technically a grenade launcher, but the effect is the same) and Aylton or Igna for plasmagunners.

The other ideas are an Elysian list, but they're not 'official' yet so it'll take some thinking to figure them out, and Orks and Eldar.
Orks are a mix of 'ard Boyz, Kommandoz and Storm Boyz. While the Eldar are an elite force of Aspect Warriors, Striking Scorpions and Swooping Hawks mostly. Another thought was Harlequins:

Shadow Seer, Death Jester, 6 Troupers (2 Fusion Pistola, 3 Kisses) all with Hard to Kill - 248pts.

Yet another was a Deathwing list:

Armoured Might

1 Sergeant - Storm Bolter, Power Sword

1 trooper - Cyclone, Pfist

1 tooper - Heavy Flamer, Pfist

1 trooper - Lightning Claws

1 trooper - Storm Bolter, Cfist

The best part is I only have to finish painting one guy to have these guys fully done ;p

However, much of this is theoretical as it is ludicrously hot right now (30+ degrees C overnight), so painting is not high on my to-do list.
That said, some KZ size games are a possibility.
