I live! and a (not so) short story

Yes, I'm still here.

New computer (old one is almost kaput), probably getting glasses in the next couple of days (vision not so good all of a sudden, so no painting or the like).

Still, in 40k type news the folks over at the Astronomicon have finally gotten around to getting the story I wrote judged. If you're thinking I'm sounding rather bitter here keep in mind we still don't have the results, and the judging has gone on for longer than the contest itself ran for...

But, as the results are finalised (though not yet published...) I'm free to direct you to my story, titled Blinded Eyes Do See.

The theme is about unsung heroes, and you can view all the entries here.

Here are a couple of exerpts from my story (it's first person PoV from an [extremely cynical and bitter] Astropath):

It was only a few minutes before the rumble of engines reached us through the wind, growling low and threatening. Shadowy figures darted in and out of the inky mist at the edge of my awareness, technicians and labourers scrambling in last minute anticipation (or apprehension). Nerves  were on edge for everybody, word must have gotten around.

Maybe the ship’s got a fifty foot long banner proclaiming “an Inquisitor has come to judge you all” and everyone but me’s seen it and started panicking.

Stopping my thoughts I cracked my jaw out – I’d been clenching it and grinding my teeth unknowingly.

I need to get out less. If I wanted fresh air I’d open a window.

“You don’t have to be possessed to work here, but it helps.”

Do you have to grow a moustache to get promoted, or do they only promote guys with them already? Maybe that’s why you hardly see any female Administrators? That and the inability of a bald woman to pull off a totally convincing comb-over probably doesn’t help either.

It's got romance! Action! Sarcasm! Bureuocracy! Gambling! Car chases! Accurate Tarot! Paperwork! Fashion! Pun names! Thinly veiled parodies of people I know! There are even some Eldar in there somewhere!
