Choosing Titan Weapons, pt 3 - the ING
The Inferno Gun
The ING is the other pure anti-infantry weapon system aside from the VMB, the ING easily outstrips it.
It has Str 7, AP3, ignores cover and uses the Hellstorm for guaranteed hits. There is a slight inconsistency in the rules for firing it though: Siege of Vraks 2 and Apocalypse both have it firing like a Hellhound - 18" range and the narrow end no closer than the large end. The Reaver PDF from Forgeworld (here) omits this, while Vraks 2 also specifies the Towering Monstrosity range minimum is ignored. I'm sure this is simply and omission on the part of the PDF, but it is still worth mentioning as technically the PDF Reaver can't fire a ING.
The main strength of the ING is, of course, in clearing infantry from cover. The template doesn't scatter, and automatically hits, ignoring cover. With its high Str and low AP it will really put a hurting on anything it touches. It can also burn multiple squads at a time.
The downside is the low range, that each squad can only get hit once per member (making it less usefull against multi-wound foes), and that it may be difficult to place the template if friendly units are around.
This is a weapon best used when leading an assault or in concert with other armour busting fire. It also shines on smaller tables, where the short range is less of a consideration. It is by no means a must-take, but depending on the situation (an urban or jungle map for instance) it can prove very valuable.
