Choosing Titan Weapons, pt 2 - the VMB
The Vulcan Mega-Suck Bolter
Ok, I'll get this out of the way - I think the VMB sucks. As a gun it is dead killy with plenty of dakka, but as a Titan gun it is severely sub-par.
The reason is twofold; low Str, and RoF. You may be wondering how I consider a Heavy 15 gun to have a problem with RoF, but when you look at the numbers for it to be an effective titan weapon it needs to be higher.
Titans have BS4, so out of 15 shots on average 10 will hit. Of these 10 how many wounds do you get?
Against T4 and under = 8.3 wounds
T5 = 6.6 wounds
AV10/T6 = 5 damaging hits (2 glance, 3 pen)
AV11/T7 = 3.3 (1.5 glance, 1.5 pen)
AV12/T8 = 1.6 (glancing hits only)
AV13/T9 or more is impossible to damage.
At AP3 you'll need some good luck to mow down a full marine squad. A five man terminator squad would need to roll badly to kill more than one. Not great when that's half the firepower of your 750pt Warhound. Had it been made S7 it would have become a much more fearsome weapon, or if it had the Stormlord's Rof of 30 as the base from the start (but the Stormlord suffers from BS3, so there you go). Titan weapons should be wiping squads (note the plural) from the board every turn - barely killing one is made of fail. It's not even good for knocking down enemy void sheilds.
It's one shining spot is that it is the only non-blast/template Imperial titan weapon system, so is good for targeting nearby infantry. You won't kill many of them but regardless of how close they are you can shoot them with impunity. That is unless you took it as a carapace weapon for your Reaver, when you can't hit anything closer than 18", so its one use is effectively negated.
Looks badass though.
